And this is how it starts

Earlier this week I took a trip to Cockpit in Leeds with my friend who had a spare ticket to see The 1975. It feels like absolutely ages since I last went to see a band live (think it might have actually been Leeds festival...  very unlike me not seeing anybody live in so long!) so it was nice to have the spark for live music ignited again inside me, especially as Cockpit is such an intimate little venue which usually has a great atmosphere.

However, despite giving me loads of motivation to find more gigs to go to over the next few months, this particular experience also filled me with a weird feeling that I'm getting OLD. We walked in and were hit with a strange feeling that we'd accidentally wandered into some sort of underage club night, with the girls running around squealing and whispering at each other because the fitty from their school just looked at them.  I think this was largely due to the fact that both support acts had  come from local high schools  and had filled the venue with their school bus groupies. And so a strange thing happened. We became part of that sensible group of old people who stand between the middle and the back of the room, enjoying the music without the risk of some swishy haired 14 year old knocking over your pint as she clambers onto her friend's back.
And actually, I think I'm ok with that.
(definitely helped by the fact that with such a young crowd filling up the front half of the room, for once we  had a near perfect view of the stage because none of the kids in front were quite fully grown yet!).

  1. Haha! This is totally me, I saw We The Kings the other night and there were barely any people oVer 18 there. I stood at the side with my cider and watched as the front of the room bounced. What's funny is I remember being 15 and being all "I HATE THOSE GUYS WHO JUST STAND AT THE BACK AND DRINK". Oh life. xx

    1. I know what you mean, I NEVER thought I'd become one of the old people at the back, oh how the times have changed... x

  2. I can totally relate to this! I used to be all about getting down the front and jumping about like a crazy woman but now I usually prefer standing back a bit & just enjoying the music xx

    1. I'm so glad it isn't just me that feels like this! It ruins my experience and stops me enjoying the music if I'm stood with all the bouncy kids at the front- they just get on my nerves when they block my view now! x

  3. Oh god, I totally know what you mean! I went out dancing last night and felt so old! We always go to the same indie/ rock places and uuuuusually folk just enjoy the music. But what I hate more than anything is that this music is considered "retro" when I was dancing to it only a few years ago when it just came out! Am I now retro? Am I OLD? Wahhhh, it hurts. It hurts, it does xx

    1. Definitely know what you mean there, I find myself listening to songs that were out when I was about 15 and seeing really young people singing along just makes me start calculating how old they must have been when the song came out and then feeling MASSIVELY old. I don't want to be oldddd. x

  4. Haha I'm part of the oap crew now, at the grand old age of 22 ;) Kids like that irritate me so much. What pisses me off is that so many of them moshing around don't actually appreciate the music, it's just a soundtrack to their lunacy. Lol rant over! ;) ♥ Claire @ Jazzpad

    1. Oh listen to us 22 year olds, we're definitely over the hill now ;). In my day it was all about the music, now I just get annoyed that these kids making unnecessary moshpits (I've seen them do it at bombay bicycle club gigs for god's sake!) are spoiling my view! x

  5. I used to queue for hours for gigs, but now I'm happy to watch them from afar. I've heard 1975 are pretty good live!
